Five-Spice Chicken Wings


There’s nothing better during tailgate season than chicken wings! Typical chicken wings are deep-fried and  slathered in some sugary-sauce. You can bake your own and build your own sauce in no-time.   As part of my Sunday night football tailgate, I wanted to include an Asian-inspired chicken wing that was crunchy on the outside but really flavorful all the way through. My secret ingredient? My mom’s favorite ingredient – Chinese Five Spice Powder. It’s fragrant, sweet, smoky and is great on chicken, pork, beef (really anything). Coat your chicken wings with this powder, salt and pepper and toss with a (lite) soy sauce based sauce and you have Asian chicken wings! I made the sauce for just 5 wings since it was just two of us, so feel free to add upon the ingredients.


  • 10-12 chicken wings
  • 2 tbsp Chinese Five Spice
  • 1/4 cup light (low-sodium) soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 – 3 tbsp honey (to taste – may need bit more)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 tbsp Hoisin (Chinese bbq sauce – its delicious but use sparingly as it’s sweet and some of the ingredients aren’t Paleo)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (reserve for sprinkling)

1.Preheat your oven to 425 degrees and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

2. Wash and thoroughly dry your chicken wings. Some people chop off the tips as you can’t really eat them and they burn easily.

2. Coat both sides with salt, pepper and Chinese Five Spice. I like to rub each side of the chicken wing to make sure the seasoning is thoroughly spread on the skin.

3. Place in oven – takes around 20 – 30 minutes. The skin on the wings should be nicely browned and wings cooked all the way through.

4. In the meantime, combine the sauce ingredients over medium-low heat in a saucepan. You just want to heat up the ingredients to thicken the sauce and meld the flavors.

5. Once the chicken is cooked, place in large bowl and pour the sauce over. Shake the bowl so all the wings are covered and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
